I have been fortunate enough to view TRYPO through three different lenses: as a parent, chaperone, and board member.
I strongly believe in the value of music education and giving back to our communities. Providing a space for young people to meet friends with common interests and feel accepted for who they are is imperative, as well as providing opportunities to increase their proficiency in their instrument while belonging to a group that shares their happiness. Developing friendships, confidence, social skills, self-accomplishment, and teamwork while interacting with a diverse group of other student musicians who are of a variety of ages, backgrounds, skills/talents coming together to make music is such a powerful experience.
As a parent, I watched my daughter and son rise to the challenge of mastering their instrumental skills by practicing and recognizing their value as part of a section as well as a whole orchestra. I witnessed their growth and development along with their happiness and excitement that increased each year. One year, after a concert, when I met my (middle school-aged) son in the lobby pick-up area he leaned in with a hug and asked me: ‘Did you see my tears from where you were sitting? They came out on the final notes of the last piece…. I just couldn’t help it. The music made me do it!’ This was such an emotional and memorable parent moment. It was obviously an emotional moment for my son too.
As a chaperone, I noticed many of the newest ensemble members uncover the same benefits as my children. Sitting side by side every week and rehearsing together displayed collaboration, communication, and fun-established lifelong friendships. I have watched young people become empowered, build their confidence, and become leaders in their lives where they thrive academically, socially, and musically. I saw them become their best selves, grounded and inspired by their music.
As a board member, I continually feel inspired by the passion of the leadership and staff of TRYPO. It is a privilege to be surrounded by dedicated board members who contribute their ideas and enthusiasm to the successful progress and expansion of a wonderful variety of student learning opportunities, all while contributing to our Pittsburgh communities through the magic of music.
There is magic in the music.
It is important to give to TRYPO on Giving Tuesday because your generosity can help uncover and elevate opportunities for our kids that will make a positive difference in their lives. Our kids bring bright ideas, creativity, and hope to our future!
