Senior Spotlight: Ben, Maddie, and Anderson

by Emily Bovan

It’s that time of year already where we feature our 2023-24 season Senior musicians! For our first post of the season,  we are featuring three woodwind musicians from our clarinet and bassoon sections. Learn more about Ben, Maddie, and Anderson below!

Ben

Ben has been a part of the #TRYPOfam for three years. During his time in TRYPO, Ben has played clarinet in our Wind Symphony ensemble. When asked why he wanted to join TRYPO, Ben shared “I wanted to play with a concert band but my school’s program was small. TRYPO was the perfect mix of fun, difficulty, and learning.” His favorite memory from his time in TRYPO is the Wind Symphony trip to Washington DC to play with the United States Air Force Band. Ben will be graduating from Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh. His future plans include going to college to major in computer science. He hopes to join a concert band as well. His advice for future TRYPO musicians is “Make sure you have fun while also practicing the intricate pieces.”

Maddie

Maddie has been playing clarinet with TRYPO for one year. She has participated in Young Peoples Orchestra and Youth Chamber Connection. When asked why she was interested in joining TRYPO, she responded, “I wanted to join an orchestra that challenged me in my musical endeavors. I also wanted to meet new people that had the same passion for music as me.” Her favorite TRYPO memory is going to Starbucks in between YC2 and YPO with my quintet friends. Maddie is graduating from Chartiers Valley High School and she plans to attend Ohio University to dual major in business and music performance. Her advice for future TRYPO musicians is “socialize and meet as many people as possible. As a first year member, I was nervous about meeting new people, and meeting my friend group has made me love it here! ”

Anderson

Anderson has been a member of TRYPO’s bassoon section for two seasons. During that time, he played in Youth Chamber Connection, and Young Peoples Orchestra. He joined TRYPO because he had been involved in other youth orchestras but was looking for somewhere more welcoming but challenging. When asked about his favorite TRYPO memory, Anderson shares it was the time that his Youth Chamber Connection group performed at the Pittsburgh Zoo Lights event. Anderson is graduating from Mt. Lebanon High School and plans to attend a university to major in music education.  His advice he would like to share with future TRYPO musicians is, “Don’t worry if you feel nervous or overwhelmed at a rehearsal, there’s a Mr. Worsdale in New York story waiting to ease your mind.”
