ADVANCED LEVEL: Young Peoples Orchestra (YPO)

Typically Ages 14-19

Please prepare:

  • G or D Major Scale (three octaves)
    • 4 notes to a bow
    • 8 notes to a bow (faster)
    • Spiccato
  • Two minutes from Solo piece such as Mozart Concerto in G Major, Bach Concerto in a minor, Nardini Concerto in e minor, Haydn Concerto in G Major or any piece of equal or greater difficulty

  • Two contrasting solo works or sections of the same work that show contrast (solos can be drawn from your existing PMEA audition material if you are already preparing for a PMEA audition).
  • Please indicate on audition form which instruments you will be bringing to your audition (Flute only, Flute + Piccolo). If bringing piccolo, prepare any excerpt from an etude or school band/orchestra repertoire.
  • ADVANCED EXCERPTS – Students wishing to be considered for YPO specifically must ALSO prepare both orchestral flute excerpts from the list below. Piccolo is strongly encouraged. Applicants should prepare at least one of the piccolo excerpts of their choice in addition to the two flute excerpts.

Placement Video Requirements: All musicians (even members of our partner orchestras, and members in pre-formed groups), need to send a 1-3 minute video showing you playing one (1) scale of your/your teacher’s choice (as many octaves as you can) as well as one (1) solo which best demonstrates your playing level.

Solo and scale should be done in one take.

You have entered the TRYPOsphere – a cosmic series of classes (with in-person and online options) designed to strengthen musical and media arts skills while you’re having a blast with other like-minded musicians.
